Smart Read: Coaching For Performance by Sir John Whitmore

We all want our businesses to flourish and perform well however, there may be times when we need that extra bit of support in order to facilitate this growth and success. In this weeks’ blog post we take a look at the book “Coaching for Performance: The Principles And Practice Of Coaching And Leadership by Sir John Whitmore.”

We keep abreast of literature and podcasts in our field that improve our own service offering. While packing to move home Carey Ann came across a book that she studied during her time at Kingstown College, “Coaching For Performance by Sir John Whitmore”. She would like to share a short review of this Smart Read for any business owner, manager or coach that wishes to gain further insight into the world of coaching and leadership.

“I absolutely loved this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone embarking on a coaching journey either as a coach themselves or as a manager who would like to enhance a team through the use of coaching techniques.

We all know that reading takes time but with an audible version available too, it’s as simple as sticking it on in the car during that morning commute or using it as a distraction whilst running your socks off on the treadmill every evening.

Don’t be put off by it’s heavy corporate almost academic appearance, this book was an extremely easy read which further highlighted the importance of being non-judgmental in one’s coaching before I had even started to delve into it.

This piece of literature contributes greatly to the Coaching Profession and is especially helpful but not limited to Executive Coaching. It is delivered with a corporate focus but when you strip it back to review the book, it is bursting with tools that can be used in any coaching or business context.

For example, this book deepened my understanding of a number of key areas on coaching but most notably it introduced me to the power of the GROW Model.

As a professional communications consultant, the bit that naturally resonated most with me was the whole area of the coaching review. Personally, I like to be measured. I like to measure and benchmark progression and results in all areas including my own Coaching Practice. In terms of measurement, this book offers a practical and proven approach that evidently works. For that reason, I love the review section. It offers a methodology for coaches to assist our clients allowing us to measure the improvement in their performance in a quantifiable way through the use of quantitative and qualitative metrics.

I operate as an executive coach coaching senior level corporate clients nationally. My referral network is ever-growing and I thoroughly enjoy helping others achieve their full potential and optimum outputs from their teams. When I stumbled across this book during the week I knew I had to share it with you all as it is definitely one for your list when striving to achieve more for yourself, your team and your business.
